Carl Zahn is a freelance product and furniture designer based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. His work explores contemporary materials and historic technologies in an attempt to create modern, more applicable, beautiful, and sustainable hybrids. His designs express a stripped-down simplicity and stark aesthetic that combines hard modernist lines and surfaces with a Danish sensibility for materials and carpentry. Each piece is designed to withstand the passing of trends and foster complex relationships that become more endearing over time.
Born and raised in rural Vermont, Carl Zahn’s work with wood and natural materials is an extension of his homeschooling and time spent playing in the woods and in woodworking workshops. After graduating with a degree in product design from the Rhode Island School of Design (2003), he traveled to San Francisco where he immersed himself in the creative and intricate metalworking culture that thrives there. In 2007, he moved to New York to begin working independently.
