Koma – a traditional Japanese spinning top, an ancient toy that has accompanied Japanese culture for centuries.
Main characteristics of the Koma:
Mostly made of wood, but there are also models made of metal or plastic.
Decorated in bright colors such as red, blue, yellow and green – sometimes with geometric patterns.
The rotation is done using a thread that is wrapped around it and then pulled, or simply by hand.
There are different types of Koma – some are small for children, others are large for competitions.
Cultural significance:
The Koma is considered a symbol of skill, concentration and balance.
In Japan, spinning top spinning competitions are held, and there are Koma artists who perform spectacular shows.
The Koma also appears in traditional Japanese art, such as woodblock prints (ukiyo-e).
Brief history:
It probably originated in China, but in Japan it became particularly popular during the Edo period (1603–1868).
Also used as an educational tool to develop coordination in children.
In Japan there are also spinning tops that spin by operating with the hand or fingers
